Attendees will experience a panel featuring Neil Gaiman, showrunners Steve Yockey and Beth Schwartz, alongside the series cast.

When the team set out to craft the sequence that opens the show, they started from a single looped image: a skull with glowing eyes and a jaw that chewed rhythmically.

That reference led creative director Jeff Han, showrunner Yockey, and Elastic TV to imagine a neon-lit world where skeletons—not ghosts—play out the boys’ downtime, scored by retro synths.

The visual idea was meant to sit between the eerie and the playful, capturing the macabre tone of the series while keeping it oddly fun; the skeletons stand in for “what’s left” of Edwin and Charles (Edwin’s bow and Charles’s metal necklace are carried through as identifying details).

Animator Lee Buckley says the bulk of the skeletal work was traditional VFX animation, but for the more exuberant dance moments the team pulled a few late-’90s dancing mocap collections from online archives.

Those archived clips were used to retarget movement and to inject some pure silliness—the very first animations produced for the project were goofy dancing tests meant to see how the rigs handled motion and to enjoy the process.

Beyond the dancing, the credits present the dead boys doing ordinary, absurd things together: tandem biking, lounging in beach chairs, and other small routines that feel true to teenage companionship.

Many of those mini-scenes are deliberately tied to the plot: a skeletal fall through a mirror nods to a ghostly ability shown in the series, for example.

Yockey and co-creator Schwartz also peppered the sequence with foreshadowing clues—mushrooms, an all-seeing eye, and a dangling mouse positioned before a cat—as visual hints toward future story beats (including the Cat King/Gage connection).

If the show continues into further seasons, the creators plan to tweak the opener each year so it reflects new cases and moods; Han imagines the boys’ moves evolving too, from jazz steps to hip-hop or skateboarding—whatever feels current for teenage energy.

Although Season 1 is set mostly in Port Townsend, Washington, the bulk of filming took place around Vancouver, British Columbia.

Production shot through the heart of a Canadian winter — principal photography ran from November 2022 into January 2023 — a timing the cast laughed off since their characters are ghosts and don’t mind the cold.

Actors Caitlin Reilly and Max Jenkins filmed during that November–January window; they weren’t in Vancouver for the series wrap but did shoot next to the lot where Riverdale is made, with Jenkins joking that they even displaced Supergirl while doing stunts.

To recreate Port Townsend’s Pacific Northwest vibe, crews used a mix of Vancouver-area neighborhoods: Fort Langley, Strathcona, Steveston, Gastown, New Westminster, and parts of Surrey (including scenes filmed at the Cloverdale branch of Surrey Libraries).

Local landmarks also appear throughout the season, among them Whytecliff Park, Sheringham Point Lighthouse, Point Grey Secondary School, the Cloverdale Fairgrounds, the North Vancouver Cemetery, Central City Fun Park, the Orpheum Theatre, and the Vancouver Art Gallery.

The premiere briefly moves the action to London, with a sequence shot on Westminster Bridge; placing the detective agency’s headquarters in London felt right for Edwin and Charles, who are portrayed as British.

Lukas Gage stars as the Cat King in the upcoming Dead Boy Detectives.

He’s a possessive ruler of his feline subjects — detectives who interfere with his cats quickly find out he won’t be kind.
